The original Amerongen Castle was established in 1286 at the request of the influential Duke Floris V. After French troops destroyed the medieval castle in 1673, a new castle was built by Godard van Reede and his wife Margaretha Turnor between 1673 and 1685.
During the second-to-last ice age, glaciers pushed their way down from Scandinavia all the way to the Rhine, carrying rocks and other material with them, which was deposited across the area from Huizen to Rhenen, thus creating the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
The extensive stretch of forests near Amerongen represents the connection between the river washlands of the Lower Rhine in the south and the Gelderse Valley in the northeast.
