Ammah, a Muslim and senior lecturer in the department of religions at the University of Ghana, was part of a group of nine African Muslims who visited four U.S. cities for three weeks recently, courtesy of the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Program.
Ammah explained, "The greatest challenge Muslims have to face in Ghana is to assert themselves -- become united, come under one umbrella, and be able to be in places where it matters, where decisions are taken.
Ammah said: "We visited the Clara Mohammed School in Washington and I was surprised to learn that it was named after an American Muslim woman who as long ago as the 1930s established a series of schools for Muslim children in America.
