Ammassalik is one of two municipalities in East Greenland (Tunu). It is in the south of East Greenland, and with an area of 232 100 km2, most of it on the ice cap, it is the largest municipality of Greeland. The population was 3 031 on Jan. 1, 2005. An ice cap is a dome-shaped water ice mass that covers less than 50,000 km² of land area (usually covering a highland area). ...


The town (capital) is called Tasiilaq, pop. 1 849. It is located on the island of Ammassalik Ø, which has an area of 772 km2. The only other settlement on this island is Ikkatteq (Ikâteq), an almost abandoned village, pop. 1. All villages area within about 80 km of Tasiilaq:

Ammassalik is known to local residents as "Tasiilaq", which in East Greenlandic means "Something resembling a lake."
Ammassalik is only a 10-minute helicopter ride from Kulusuk, but this short flight is one of the most scenic expeditions imaginable as you cross the ice-filled sea separating these two mountainous islands.
The town of Ammassalik lies just south of the Arctic Circle and boasts long hours of daylight in the summer and the splendour of the northern lights in the winter.
