Ammersee with German Alps Ammersee (Lake Ammer) is a lake in upper Bavaria, Germany located in the southwest of Munich between the towns of Herrsching and Diessen. With a surface area of approximately 47 square kilometres it is among the five largest German lakes. Its elevation is 520 metres, its maximum depth is 81 metres. Like other Bavarian lakes, Ammersee developed as a result of the ice age glaciers melting. Ammersee is fed by the River Ammer which flows as Amper out of the lake. Like its neighbour lake, Starnberger See, which is similar in size and shape, it is a popular location for watersports.
