Little is known of Amphibian's early history, although it is believed his real name is Kingsley Rice. The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe calls him a mutant, but as this was not mentioned in any comics, it is believed to be incorrect. He claims to be Earth-712's third strongest being, after Hyperion and Power Princess. After joining these two, plus Nighthawk, the Whizzer, Dr. Spectrum and the Skrullian Skymaster to defeat a giant robot, he became one of the founding members of the Squadron Supreme. Supreme Power In the current Supreme Power series, Amphibian is a telepathic female humanoid with fish-like physical characteristics. She was left to die in the ocean after her mother committed suicide when she was born, and her father went insane. Still, she managed to survive to her adult age. Her first encounter with humans began with a female diver. The diver panicked upon seeing her, broke her air hose, and suffocated in front of the Amphibian. The Amphibian had a flashback of her own mother dying that way in front of her. The Amphibian returned the dead woman to the boat, where the lady's husband happened to be waiting. The husband panicked at the sight of the Amphibian and attacked her with a spear gun. She killed him in retaliation to the wound and the boat somehow exploded. She appeared later, when she discovered Doctor Spectrum being healed by his power crystal on the ocean floor after being defeated by Hyperion. Captured by the government, the female (who assumed the name Amphibian in Squadron Supreme, vol. 2) was named Kingsley Rice (a play on Aquaman's human name 'Arthur Curry' - the most famous Arthur is King Arthur, Curry is typically served with Rice) by Doctor Spectrum. Her appearance sometimes changes somewhat depending on her emotional state, indicating that, like the original Amphibian, she may have some metamorphic or adaptive powers. So far, Amphibian has demonstrated telepathic abilities (having grown up in the ocean, she does not know how to talk verbally), sharp claws, increased strength, slight metamorphic abilities, gills, and fins.
