Encyclopedia > Amra Bangalee

Amra Bangalee (We are Bengalis) is a political party in India. The movement has its roots in religious sect Ananda Marga, founded by Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar.

The politics of Amra Bangalees are Bengali chauvinism. The party is not only organized in West Bengal, but also in other states with large Bengali populations, such as Tripura, Assam and Jharkhand. The only real political breakthrough the party has had was in Tripura during the 1980s, when the party entered the Legislative Assembly in connection with the mounting ethnic tensions in the state. In Tripura the group also built up an armed wing, United Bengali Liberation Front. Today the group is however, marginalized.

In the Lok Sabha elections 2004 the party put up four candidates in West Bengal (Cooch Behar: 8,527 votes, Jalpaiguri: 5,103 votes, Purulia: 3,536 votes, Bankura: 3,982 votes), two in Tripura (Tripura West: 6,920 votes, Tripura East: 7,941 votes) and one in Jharkhand (Jamshedpur: 2,098 votes).
