Ancient Anguish is a fantasy themed MUD based on the Amylaar driver which operates on LPC code. Coding for the mud started in 1991, and it opened to the public in February, 1992. It is completely free to play, even though it is supported by player donations. Unlike many muds, which are administered by a single individual who takes on the title 'God', a Senate of 'Wizards' has been implemented. It remains one of the most popular LPMuds on the internet today. Look up Fantasy in Wiktionary, the free dictionary For other definitions of fantasy, see fantasy (psychology). ...

On Ancient Anguish, a player can choose between fighter, mage, ranger, cleric, shapeshifter, necromancer and paladin. Several years ago, the people in charge did a major overhaul of the combat system and created a skills system for melee combat, giving an edge to fighters who lack the powerful spells of other classes. Players can join different guilds on the game. They include, the Scythe, Bears, Monks, Courts of Chaos, and the Knights of Drin. Each guild has its own purpose and restrictions.
