Encyclopedia > Ancient civilization

The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000-5,500 years, with cuneiform possibly being the oldest form of writing. Genetic evidence, however, points to the first appearance of human beings about 150,000 years ago. There is also a growing body of evidence that Homo sapiens first left Africa about 60,000 years ago. For further information about human origins, see Human evolution.

Ancient history is from the period of time when writing and historical records first appear, roughly 5,500 years before the Common Era. For some, the discovery of Agriculture, roughly 6,000 BCE is the beginning of ancient history. The end of ancient history is A.D. 476 (the fall of the Western Roman Empire).

Ancient Civilization (588 words)
Ancient Egyptian civilization, which many regard as one of the fountainheads of Western culture, was one of the greatest in the history of the world.
Describing the development of Egyptian civilization, like attempts to identify its intellectual foundations, is largely a process of conjecture based on archaeological discoveries of enduring ruins, tombs, and monuments, many of which contain invaluable specimens of ancient Egyptian culture.
The ancient Roman civilization succeeded the Greeks as the dominant political cultural force in the Mediterranean basin, centred initially in the heart of the Italian peninsula.
Indus Valley Civilization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (3486 words)
There were Indus civilization settlements spread as far south as Mumbai, as far east as Delhi, as far west as the Iranian border, and as far north as the Himalayas.
It should be remembered that Indus civilization people, like all peoples in South Asia, built their lives around the monsoon, a weather pattern in which the bulk of a year's rainfall occurs in a four-month period.
Unlike other ancient civilizations, the archaeological record of the Indus civilization provides practically no evidence of armies, kings, slaves, social conflict, prisons, and other oft-negative traits that we traditionally associate with early civilization, although this could simply be due to the sheer completeness of its collapse and subsequent disappearance.
