Encyclopedia > And So It Goes

And So It Goes is the stirring ballad written by Billy Joel in 1983, though it wasn't released until six years later, appearing as the tenth and final track of his megahit album "Stormfront." Joel wrote the song at the close of his relationship with Elle McPherson, and expressed therein a great longing to be with someone you love, while knowing that your relationship is at an end. This hit single now stands as one of the greatest break-up songs ever released in popular music. Originally accompanied by a simple and beautiful piano backdrop as Joel croons to an identical melody, It has been covered by many subsequent artists, including Carmen Rasmussen, the King's Singers, and others.
