Andenes is the only place in the world where intensive photo-ID studies have been consistently carried out over a period of years on an adult male sperm whale population, and we are naturally keen to continue this opportunity for research.
In the highest latitudes, such as Andenes, we are, therefore, likely to observe mostly the large mature males (20 - 35 year olds) who are feeding intensively and increasing in size until they are ready to migrate south to the mating grounds.
Whale watching at Andenes has been growing rapidly, with nearly 14,500 visitors in 1998, and the question has inevitably arisen as to whether the increasing attention might constitute a disturbance to the whales’ natural behaviour.
