Encyclopedia > Andijon

Andijan (also Andijon, Andizhan, Andizan) is a city of western Uzbekistan. Population 303,000. It is the capital of the province of the same name (Andijon Wiloyati).


Geography

Andijan is located in the Fergana Valley, near the border with Kyrgyzstan on the Andijan-Say River.


History

Andijan was an important stop along the Silk Road. It was seized by Russia in 1876.


Economy

Andijan is an industrial center in an irrigated area that produces fruits, cotton and silk.
