André Kuipers (born October 5, 1958, in Amsterdam) is the second Dutch astronaut (the first one being Wubbo Ockels) to engage on a space flight, on April 18, 2004. Using the Soyuz spacecraft Soyuz TMA-4, Gennady Padalka from Russia, Michael Fincke from the USA and Kuipers flew to the International Space Station. Kuipers returned to earth 9 days later together with ISS crew 8 with the Soyuz TMA-3. The other two will stay as ISS crew 9. The Soyuz TMA-4 will also stay. In July 1999, AndréKuipers joined the European Astronaut Corps of the European Space Agency, whose homebase is at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany.
AndréKuipers was assigned to the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC), Noordwijk, The Netherlands, continuing his former work for the Microgravity Payloads Division within the Directorate of Human Spaceflight.
AndréKuipers is currently performing post flight activities and collateral duties in several areas, such as support to ESA payload development, parabolic flight campaigns, healthcare spin-off, as well as to ground support for missions of other ESA astronauts.
