Andre Cymone (born Andre Anderson) is a bassist, songwriter and record producer. His stage name comes from a variation of his middle name, Simon. A bassist is a musician who plays a double bass or electric bass (also referred to as bass guitar). ... Cymone was the youngest of six children. His father Fred Anderson was a musician, while his mother Bernadette a social worker in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Anderson's home soon had an additional member — a young Prince who left his own home due to conflicts with his stepfather. Prince and Cymone started a cover band in high school called Grand Central (later renamed Champagne) which also included his Cymone's sister Linda and schoolmate Morris Day. In the late 1970s, after Prince released his debut album he recruited Cymone as bassist for his touring band. He stayed with Prince until 1981, quitting the band over tensions with Prince. Reportedly, Prince's signature ballad from Controversy, "Do Me, Baby" was originally written by Cymone in the late 70s and Prince re-recorded it and put it on the album as revenge against Cymone. The 1970s decade refers to the years from 1970 to 1979, inclusive. ... For You is Princes debut album, released in October of 1978, when the artist was 20 years old, and bearing the classic tag, Written, composed, performed, and recorded by Prince. The two later resolved their issues and Cymone went on to release 3 solo albums — Livin' in the New Wave (1982), Survivin' in the 80's (1983), and AC (1985). All are long out of print. His most successful single was "The Dance Electric," a song penned by Prince from the album AC.


Cymone went on to become a record producer and is better known for producing Jody Watley (to whom he was married and shares a son) than for the music he released as a solo artist. André Cymone was born André Simon Anderson, and his contribution to Prince’s early career should never be underestimated.
Cymone’s sister Linda Anderson soon joined on keyboards, and with Terry Jackson and William Doughty on percussion the band Grand Central was formed.
Cymone signed with Columbia Records (who had initially turned down Prince) and was able to convince Columbia to give him the same creative freedoms that Prince had obtained from Warner Bros. Cymone’s first self-produced and -performed album came out in early 1982, entitled ‘Livin In The New Wave’.
