Archbishop Cordero Lanza di Montezemolo was born in Turin, Italy. He began his career in the Roman Curia in 1976 when he was appointed Secretary of Justice and Peace. On June 4, 1977 he was ordained a bishop. A career diplomat, he has served as Apostolic Delegate to the Solomon Islands and later to Jerusalem and Palestine; Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Papua New Guinea and Cyprus; and Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua, Honduras, Uruguay, Israel, Italy, and San Marino. He is now retired.
