Though Whittam Smith had thought about a Sunday paper for months, it was his discovery in April 1988 that the Chicago Tribune Company was planning to launch its own quality Sunday London broadsheet that pushed him into action.
Whittam Smith would remain as editor-in-chief and would be given a three-year contract as chairman of the consortium's board.
In a stunning rebuke to Whittam Smith, The Independent chapter of the National Union of Journalists unanimously voted in February to request a full investigation of the MGN proposal by the government's Mergers and Monopolies Commission.
