Located in the Big Sur area, this park is still relatively undeveloped and offers visitors great hiking, fishing and beachcombing. Miles of trails wind through meadows, beaches and hilltops. A primitive walk-in trail camp, popular with hikers and bikers, is located approximately one third mile from the parking area.
There are 24 identified sites. Camping is allowed only at these sites with a maximum of four people per site. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
The establishment of 24 sites with a limit of four people per site allows for maximum availability of individual campsites, yet continues to meet the required carrying capacity.
This is the largest statepark along Big Sur, and its many attractions range from easy-access trails and Captain Cooper's 100-year-old pioneer log cabin to horseback rides and bobcat sightings.
Blessedly untrammeled by the masses, MoleraPark attracts loners and small groups who usually know their way around, so don't hesitate to ask for directions or tips.
Walking along the beach is especially rewarding, particularly after rolling up your pant legs and wading across an icy yet relatively shallow stream separating the coast from the rest of the park.
AndrewMoleraStatePark itself has a large main parking area, but there is an entrance fee ($3 currently but subject to change; see the StatePark web site).
Except during flood stage in winter, a wooden bridge leads from the main parking lot to the south side and then west to the beach (~1 mile walk), and there is also another bridge from in front of the BSOL lab to the south side of the river.
AndrewMoleraStatePark is a huge 4800 acre park and the vast majority of it is east of Highway 1.
