Andrews is a town located in South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,068.


Geography

Andrews is located at 33°26'60" North, 79°33'50" West (33.449994, _79.564010)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.7 km˛ (2.2 mi˛). None of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,068 people, 1,182 households, and 843 families residing in the town. The population density is 538.4/km˛ (1,392.6/mi˛). There are 1,347 housing units at an average density of 236.4/km˛ (611.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 37.55% White, 60.76% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,182 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% are married couples living together, 26.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.12.


In the town the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 77.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 73.3 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $19,375, and the median income for a family is $22,750. Males have a median income of $24,891 versus $17,344 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,105. 34.2% of the population and 30.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 45.8% of those under the age of 18 and 21.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

At Bennettsville, South Carolina, on November 10, 1909, Walter H. Andrews married Miss Mayde Matheson, the daughter of the late Alexander J. Matheson and Sarah Ellen (Jarnargan) Matheson.
The death of Colonel Walter H. Andrews on January 20, 1935, was an irreparable loss to the city which he loved so well and to its people of all classes and in his passing the state of South Carolina lost a beloved and distinguished citizen.
