In the context of male homosexuality, androphilia is the mutual attraction of adult men. It is to be distinguished from ephebophilia, or the attraction of an adult man to an adolescentmale. While there is no sharp demarcation point between the two desires, they mark the two different poles between which have swung the accepted forms of homosexual desire at various times in history. In ancient Greece, androphilic relationships were rare, as sex between males was generally conceived of as intercrural intercourse and the overriding taboo was against a man assuming a "passive" sexual position with a social equal or inferior. The Greek ideal of pederasty remained the dominant conception of homosexuality until the twentieth century. The gay rights movement distanced itself from these allegedly "exploitive" relationships with youth, and instead emphasized the consensual nature of adult homosexual relationships. The relative social acceptance of these two forms of homosexuality varies greatly from country to country.
Androphilia is his persuasive, compelling, no-frills Boot Camp.
Androphilia is a rejection of the overloaded gay identity and a return to a discussion of homosexuality in terms of desire: a raw, apolitical sexual desire and the sexualized appreciation for masculinity as experienced by men.
Androphilia is for those men who never really bought what the gay community was selling; it's a challenge to leave the gay world completely behind and to rejoin the world of men, unapologetically, as androphliles, but more importantly, as men.
The terms gynephilia and androphilia are occasionally (but increasingly) used when referring to the sexual orientation of transgender and intersex people, since the terms homosexual and heterosexual can be problematic for such individuals.
Androphilia and gynephilia are often preferred, because rather than focusing on the sex or gender of the subject, they only describe that of the object of their attraction.
The term androphilia has been useful in describing societies where pederasty was the norm, but where homosexual attraction to adult men was frowned upon.
