When Saturday Comes - the half decent football magazine (589 words)
Woody is Andy Woodman, who started out his career as an apprentice at Crystal Palace in the late Eighties, signed up, we’re reminded some 140 to 150 times throughout this text, for £27.50 per week.
Woodman emerges as an improviser and a chancer probably well suited to the precariousness and vicissitudes of footballing life as a journeyman, of which he gives a bumpy enough account here.
There’s irony, too, in that Woodman’s career has been rather pillar-to-post whereas Southgate was practically held hostage for a year at Villa, missed out on a dream career move and ended up at Middlesbrough, graveyard of footballing ambition.
