The station was opened originally as Anerley Bridge by the London & Croydon Railway on 5 June 1839. The main buildings are on the Up side; parts of the buildings may be the original. There is a subway leading to the Down side platform on which is a waiting room. Four lines run through the station, the central pair being the Up and Down through lines.
