Angelica is a village located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 903.


The Village of Angelica was incorporated in 1835 and is within the Town of Angelica.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.6 km˛ (2.2 mi˛). None of the area is covered with water.


Angelica Creek, a tributary of the Genesee River flows westward through the village.


The Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86 and New York 17) passes south of the village. County Routes 20 and 16 pass through the village.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 903 people, 366 households, and 243 families residing in the village. The population density is 162.2/km˛ (420.5/mi˛). There are 409 housing units at an average density of 73.4/km˛ (190.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 98.01% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 366 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% are married couples living together, 12.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.6% are non-families. 28.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the village the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.7 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $32,734, and the median income for a family is $37,500. Males have a median income of $27,440 versus $20,893 for females. The per capita income for the village is $15,486. 12.5% of the population and 10.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.1% of those under the age of 18 and 8.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The county fairgrounds are located in the village. Park Circle, in the village center, includes a roque court.


Many of the one hundred old buildings in the historical district are on the New York or federal register. Angelica was once the county seat of Allegany County and is one of the oldest communities in the county.
