Angra, or Angra do Heroismo ("Bay of Heroism," a name given it in 1829, to commemorate its successful defence against the Miguelist party), the former capital of the Portuguesearchipelago of the Azores, and chief town of an administrative district, comprising the islands of Terceira, S o Jorge and Graciosa. Angra is built on the south coast of Terceira in 38 38' N. and in 27 13' W. It is the headquarters of a military command, and the residence of a Roman Catholic bishop; its principal buildings are the cathedral, military college, arsenal and observatory. The harbour, now of little commercial or strategic importance, but formerly a celebrated naval station, is sheltered on the west and south-west by the promontory of Mt. Brazil; but it is inferior to the neighbouring ports of Ponta Delgada and Horta. The foreign trade is not large, and consists chiefly in the exportation of pineapples and other fruit. Angra served as a refuge for Queen Maria II of Portugal from 1830 to 1833. The population is 35,581 (2001) and the area is 237.52 km. The density is 149.80/km . It is one of the largest municipality in the Azores. The district includes the southwestern half of the island of Terceira. It is encircled almost entirely with the Atlantic Ocean except for the east. It is bordered by Praia da Vit ria to the west.

The largest parish is Porto Judeu and the smallest is Santa Luzia. The leastly populated parish is Serreta and the mostly populated is Nossa Senhora da Concei o.
AngradoHeroismo was the seat of a captaincy in 1474, and it soon became an important trading centre thanks to the natural qualities of its harbour as evidenced even in its name (Angra means Bay).
Until the early 19th century, Angra, as the seat of the captaincy-general, retained its standing as the governmental centre of the Azores although there was a reduction of its importance as an Atlantic seaport.
AngradoHeroismo is one of the administrative seats of the Autonomous Regio and has one of the centers of the University of the Azores.
