The Anhui clique (Chinese: 皖系; pinyin: Wǎn Xì) was one of several mutually hostile cliques or factions that split from the Beiyang Clique in the Republic of China's Warlord era. It was named after Anhui province because of its founder, Duan Qirui, was born in Anhui. The Anhui Clique participated in the Zhili-Anhui War (1920) for control of Beijing. Pinyin is a system of romanization (phonemic notation and transcription to Roman script) for Standard Mandarin, where pin means spell(ing) and yin means sound(s)).
