Work Experience

Referred to as "temples of modern India" by India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, India's steel plants needed qualified engineers to run and optimize. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a government owned company set up to run these steel plants, hired Anil and a few other batchmates for training programs with Russian engineers on deputation to India for helping India get on her feet in iron and steel production. He was assigned to various steel plants and research centers in the mineral-rich East India from 1978 through 1983. The towns and cities Anil worked at included Bokaro, Bhilai, and Ranchi in the state of Bihar and Durgapur in West Bengal. Jawaharlal Nehru (जवाहरलाल नेहरू, Javāharlāl Nehrū) (November 14, 1889 – May 27, 1964), also called Pandit (Scholar, Teacher) Nehru, was one of the most important leaders of the Indian Independence Movement and the Indian National Congress, and became the first Prime Minister of India when India won its independence on August... In 1983 he was assigned to the head office for SAIL in New Delhi, where he would work on several projects until 1993. For a couple of years in the late 1980s he was on deputation in India's Ministry of Steel where he was in charge of technical and economic assessment of projects submitted to the government for approval during the license regime, much before any plans of liberelisation were on the horizon.

Beuraucratic hassles and impediments to growth led Anil to quit SAIL in 1993 and to join the Indian Operations of the German steel giant Mannesman Demag in Delhi. This position involved technical aspects of project analysis as well as marketing of the same to potential clients. Economic Liberalization had still not taken off, and Indian companies were still shackled in terms of planning expansions of iron and steel production and even greenfield projects. This translated into a lack of projects and clients with Mannesman Demag. Anil quit the company after 3 years.

Anil then joined Hindalco, the flagship company of the Aditya Birla group. Even though he made a transtion into aluminium, a non-ferrous metal, his skills of project management and implementation proved invaluable for Hindalco, as it was riding the liberalization wave and the boom in the aluminum sector. Soon, Anil found himself in Australia, dismantling and packing an aluminum wheel rim plant to be shipped and installed in India. As the person managing this project from inception to implementation, Anil led a team of dedicated engineers over 2 years of work that involved long hours and frequent travel to remote plant locations like Silvassa, an erstwhile Portugese colony on the west coast of India surrounded by the Indian state of Gujarat. After implementation of this project, he was involved in other operations and new projects with Hindalco which incidentally far and few between. The Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, Kumaramangalam Birla, planned to improve shareholder value by way of mergers and acquisitions, as opposed to supporting plans for any greenfield projects or expansion of existing plants. Incidentally this strategy hasn't really worked for Kumaramangalam Birla, who has lost his lost his second-place rank in Forbes' list of Richest Indians to people like steel tycoon Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, IT czar Azim Premji, Sunil Mittal of Bharti telecom and the Ambani brothers of Reliance Industries. Having said that, one would have to admit that Hindalco (as well as the whole group) has also gained in worth albeit at a lesser rate than that of most new-age companies. Due to lack of project opportunities at Hindalco, Anil quit the Delhi office in late 2005.
