Located in southwest Colorado, the Animas River is a freestone fishery well populated with rainbows and browns and a few cutthroat and brook trout. The Animas can be found just north of the New Mexico border following U.S. Highway 550 for much of its journey. The town of Durango is located at about the midway point between the rivers headwaters and the San Juan River where the Animas empties its flow. The Animas River headwaters are in the San Juan Mountains and starts at the conflunce of the West and North forks at the ghost town of Animas Forks. The river flows south past the ghost towns of Eureka and Howardsville. The river flows through the town of Silverton and into the Animas Canyon.
