Anna's economy relies heavily on employment in the nursing home and mental health industry. Anna is serviced by a city newspaper, the Anna Gazette-Democrat and a single AM radio station. The cities of Anna and Jonesboro Illinois have grown together and essentially form a single city. Although Jonesboro is the county seat of Union County, Anna is the larger town. The larger community of Anna formed around the railroad which passed north of Jonesboro. "Anna" is the name of the wife of the land investor that plotted the railroad route through the area.
