AnnaG. Eshoo was born in New Britain, Conn., and lives in Atherton, Calif. She graduated from Canada College in 1975.
Eshoo and other women lawmakers who were pushing to repeal the ban said the floor debate had a nasty tenor to it, and that they were forced to endure paternalistic comments from their male colleagues.
AnnaEshoo was elected to the U.S. House in 1992 with 57 percent of the vote, defeating Republican Tom Huening.
Eshoo said lobbying on behalf of Medicare legislation by individual physicians and associations was instrumental in "the restoration of billions of dollars to teaching hospitals.
Eshoo credited Gary Glazer, professor and chair of radiology, and Herbert Abrams, professor of radiology, whose visits to lawmakers, she said, spurred legislation directing the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to review the feasibility of creating an Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Engineering.
Eshoo was elected to the House of Representatives in 1992 and currently serves as a member of the House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment.
