History Chennai had one of the first airports in India, and was the final destination of Air India's first flight from Bombay via Belgaum in 1954.
A scene from the viewing gallery The first passenger terminal was built at the northeast side of the airfield, which lies in the suburb of Meenambakkam due to which it was referred to as Meenambakkam Airport. A new terminal complex was subsequently built further south near Pallavaram to which passenger operations were shifted. The old terminal building is now used as a cargo terminal and is the base for the Indian courier company Blue Dart. Structure Chennai International Airport consists of three terminals: The old terminal at Meenambakkam is used for cargo, while the new passenger terminal complex near Pallavaram is used for passenger operations. The passenger terminal complex consists of the domestic and international terminals interconnected by a link building, which houses administrative offices and a restaurant. Although the complex is one continuous structure, it was built at different periods.[citation needed] The first part to be built was the International terminal which had two aerobridges (jetways), followed by the domestic terminal with three aerobridges. After the completion of the domestic terminal, the old terminal at Meenambakkam was used exclusively for cargo. Recently the International terminal was extended further south by adding a new block which includes three aerobridges. At present, the new international block is used for departures while the older building is used for arrivals. An Aerobridge is a motorised boarding tunnel for boarding aircraft. ...

Chennai Airport Expansion Various airlines at the Domestic Apron Deepak Raj Pareeks residents fear that going by the statement showing the total area of land proposed for the airport expansion prepared by the Airports Authority of India in November 2005, almost the whole of Gowl Bazaar and half of Pozhichalur would be taken up.This proposed acquisition is going to displace around 15,000 people. Residents are of the view that they are not being treated fairly as their lands and houses are being demolished not for the modernization but in order to protect the hundreds of acres of adjoining areas in the northern side owned by politicians and real estate tycoons. The State and Centre should come spotless with a clear approach on what precisely they intend to do. According to the statement, about 107 hectares (ha) of Gowl Bazaar (total area 122 ha) and 111 ha of Pozhichalur (total area 249 ha) were needed for the project. Further, the requirement was 14 ha in Anakaputhur (298 ha), 8 hectares in Cantonment Pallavaram (385 ha) and 2 hectares in Pammal (520 ha). Of the total requirement of 244 ha in Tambaram Taluk (above mentioned places), 189 ha was patta land, while 50 ha was classified as poromboke and about 5 ha belonged to the Central Government. In Sriperumbudur Taluk, the land needed for acquisition in the proposed scheme was 129 ha. Eleven hectares were needed in Tarapakkam (total area 125 ha); 21 in Manapakkam (410 ha); 52 in Kolapakkam (316 ha) and 43 in Gerugambakkam (393 ha).
