Kantor was born in Saratov to a Jewish family. She studied at the Central Music School in Moscow with Tatyana Kestner and Tamara Bobovich and at the Moscow Conservatoire with Abram Shatskes. From 1948 until 1991, Kantor taught at the Gnessin Music School in Moscow. Her students include Evgeny Kissin, Nikolai Demidenko, Alexey Semenov, Vladimir Bagrov, Lyudmila Berlinskaya, Anton Batagov, Elizaveta Smirnova, and Ekaterina Apekisheva.
