She was first hired as deputy press secretary during Season 6 (with Chenoweth in a recurring guest role) and later became a campaign staff member (when Chenoweth became part of the regular cast during Season 7). In the final episode of Season 6, Schott helped Leo McGarry coordinate the Democratic National Convention. She subsquently joined the staff of the presidential campaign of Matthew Santos. In the Santos campaign she has taken on the role of chief aide to McGarry, who is the Democratic nominee for Vice President. Little is known about Schott's private life:

  • She graduated with a degree in art history.
  • She handles her fear of flying by routinely taking pills and drinking champagne before flying, steps designed to knock her unconscious for the duration of the flight.
  • She once remarked, "I always have a date."

During Season 7 there seemed to be the suggestion of a romance between her and Vice-Presidential candidate Leo McGarry — this was hinted at when she turned down the chance to eat dinner with him, citing "tension" between the two of them, and when she was said to be singing about Leo in the final days of the campaign.
