History

Johnston Street is named after the Johnston, who captained a ship which brought a shipload of convicts to Australia from England. The land which is now called Annandale was given to him to farm. He and Ester Abrahams one of the convicts on the ship farmed it, with their children, until it was subdivided in the late part of the 19th Century. Since then it has undergone a number of social transformations. From Factory Floors, Migrant stop off, Aging population and now young families and modern small and micro businesses. One of the main streets of the suburb Booth Street was a song by popular local band Youth Group on their debut album Urban and Eastern.
