The film was initially broadcast as Anne of Avonlea. However, on video and in some television airings, it has been retitled Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel. Likely, this decision was made because the film actually incorporates elements from not only Anne of Avonlea, but also Anne of the Island, and Anne of Windy Poplars and introduces several characters and issues not present in the books.


From 1989 to 1996 Kevin Sullivan produced Road to Avonlea based upon characters and episodes from several of Montgomery's books. Anne herself did not appear in the TV series, but GĂ­lbert Blythe, Marilla Cuthbert and other characters from the Anne books are included.
