Summary
This book tells about the three years between Anne's graduation from Redmond and her marriage. In this book, Anne lives in the tower room of Windy Poplars, where two widows and their servant Rebbeca Dew and their cat, Dusty Miller, live. She teaches at the Summerside High School, where she is also the principal. The book is filled with many chronicles involving the Pringles, a family who declared war on her after she got the place of principal instead of a Pringle, the other teachers, mostly Katherine Brooke, a depressed lady who is alone in the world, and many other people of Summerside, like her student Jen Pringle, her friend and later enemy Hazel. Anne lives next door to the Campbells, an old lady and her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth. The old lady is very strict and doesn't seem to love Elizabeth, because her granddaughter died giving birth to Elizabeth. Elizabeth's father left her at Mrs. Campbell's for the same reason. Throughout the book, Anne becomes close friends with Elizabeth and finally writes to her father, entreating him to come for Elizabeth. This attempt proves fruitful, as Elizabeth and her father go to live together in Boston.
