American Music, shot in both fl-and-white and color, is the result of Leibowitz's travels over the last four years, shooting musicians in both contemporary genres such as rap and techno, and traditional genres such as blues and gospel, in their home environments in Los Angeles, Nashville, Philadelphia, Austin, New Orleans, Michigan and Mississippi.
Instead, Leibowitz has photographed musicians in their homes, yards and cars, in recording studios and rehearsal halls, outside churches and inside juke joints.
As Leibowitz has allowed the situation and the artist to dictate the style of the photo, her own style has become less distinctive.
