This is an outstanding manual, by one outstanding fly tier, on the arts and techniques of tying flies. Starting with the most basic of information, the author clearly explains and illustrates each step of the fly tying procedure, until the fly is completed. Presented here are the basic steps and advanced techniques needed to construct the feathered frauds that are a must in the repertoire of the sophisticated angler. Discusses how to use the blending and dubbing of fur; the selection of game hackles; all are discussed and carefully explained. Here too are presented the details of the construction of the most effective of fly patterns for bucktails and streamers; stone and caddis flies; salmon and steelhead flies; the Darbee crane fly, etc., and more importantly, the knowledge needed to turn out any fly is imparted to the reader. Each detail in the construction is fully illustrated with the superbly presented photographs by Irv Swope. In addition the completed fly patterns are fully illustrated in eight full color plates. Poul Jorgensen has been tying flies professionally since about 1950. A student and close friend of Bill Blades, Poul's flies have earned for him the reputation of being not only a master fly tier, but also the foremost exponent of the artistry of blending fur, feathers and steel into the most lifelike of natural imitations. As a resident of Towson, Maryland, Poul is apt to be found anywhere in the fly fishing world demonstrating his own brand of fly tying art.
