Plot

Marge is reading The Bridges of Madison County one night and wakes up Homer to ask if he thinks the romance has gone out of their marriage. He grumbles and throws the book into a fireplace which has suddenly appeared in the bedroom. Marge grumbles back and goes back to sleep. The Bridges of Madison County is a best-selling novel by Robert James Waller which tells the story of a lonely Italian war bride who develops a romantic interest in a dashing photographer who has come to Madison County, Iowa in order to create a photographic essay on the covered... This article primarily discusses philosophical ideologies in relation to the subject of romantic love. ... Marriage is an interpersonal relationship with governmental, social, or religious recognition, usually intimate and sexual, and often created as a contract, or through civil process. ... Winter (fireplace), tacuinum sanitatis casanatensis (XIV century) A fireplace is an architectural element consisting of a space designed to contain a fire, generally for heating but sometimes also for cooking. ...

In the morning, Marge gets the family together to discuss romance, but they can only come up with vignettes from their failed relationships (and in the parents' case, near-extramarital paramours) in the form of clips from previous episodes. However, Homer saves the day when he brings up how he and Marge got together (in clips from the second season episode "The Way We Was"). Ultimately, the kids do not care and end up watching Itchy & Scratchy while Homer and Marge share another special moment. The Way We Was is the 12th episode of the second season of The Simpsons. ... Itchy and Scratchy The Itchy & Scratchy Show is a fictional television cartoon show within the television cartoon show The Simpsons (see show-within-a-show). ...

  • When Bart, Lisa, and Maggie are watching Itchy and Scratchy near the start, Marge says they watch the same shows all the time, and Lisa says they just paste together pieces of old episodes. This is a joke, as Marge walking in is a scene from an old episode, and the entire episode is a clip show which is just old scenes pasted together to make a new episode.
  • The episode was generally forced to be produced by 20th Century Fox who wanted another episode; the credited writer Penny Wise (who was actually Jon Vitti) pokes fun at this (from the phrase "Penny wise, pound foolish"). "Mrs. Wise" would be credited as writing a future clip show, "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular", would credit the director as "Pound Foolish", implying a poke at FOX.
  • The blackboard and couch gags are from another episode, and there is a lot of recycled animation instead of new animation throughout the episode, all taking the idea of being a clip show to the extreme.
  • The magazine that Lisa holds up at the end of the episode is called Non-Threatening Boys (from "Radio Bart").
  • The song is referenced in the 1996 song "The First Big Weekend" by the Scottish band, Arab Strap, describing it as "a really good episode about love always ending in tragedy, except of course for Marge and Homer".
  • This episode was put together very quickly (note that the production code for this episode is 2F33, the last in the 2F series, yet it aired before any others in this series did), and it is rumoured that the production code in the end credits was originally erroneously listed. On the lone network airing of this episode, the first 3 looks somewhat out of place compared to the other characters; in syndication and the season 6 DVD boxset, the second 3 appears out of place.
  • Also Starring Michael Carrington.

A clip from the movie is interrupted by Bart's voice, complete with an oscilloscope-like trace, announces that he is controlling the transmission (in a parody of The Outer Limits).
Another version seems normal until Willie bursts in, claiming that he can help Homer return to his own world; however, Maggie kills Willie with an axe in his back, then takes off her pacifier and says, "This is indeed a disturbing universe" (voiced over by James Earl Jones).
After several changes to the present, including one where the house is transformed into the Sphinx with Bart's face and another in which the house is swapped for the Flinstones' abode, Homer eventually arrives in a present where everything seems normal: Ned Flanders is simply their neighbor, donuts are plentiful...
