Anthem is a song written by Canadian progressive rock trio Rush. It appears on their Fly by Night album from 1975. The lyrics are heavily influenced by Ayn Rand, a writer Rush lyricist Neil Peart was influenced by immensely in that time period. The song is about individualism and love and respect for the self and ego. It preaches the listener to live for themself and realize it is they who are in charge of their own life. Musically, the song is a classic example of early Rush, heavy in loud, fast guitar, drum, and bass licks, and features the well known shriek of vocalist Geddy Lee.
