Hamilton has only reached two ranking finals, the British Open of 1999, where he lost to Fergal O'Brien, and the 2001 China Open where he was beaten by Mark Williams, 9-8 having led 8-5. His world ranking reached number 10 the next season, the best of his 4-season run in the top 16. In 2000 he suffered a broken wrist sustained by falling out of a taxi whilst drunk, an injury which kept him out of several tournaments and ultimately cost him a top 16 place.
