Boxing career

Mundine fought his first professional boxing match in July 2000, at the age of 25. After a limited amateur career (he had 4 amateur fights when he was 17), his first professional fight was against New Zealander Gerrard Zohs. Only 10 professional bouts later Mundine fought for his first world title against long reigning IBF supermiddleweight champion Sven Ottke in January 2001. The fight ended suddenly after 10 competitive rounds when Ottke landed a blow to Mundine's temple that left the latter unconscious on the canvass. Despite this dramatic loss, he returned to the ring, promising to fight again for a world title. Again, the title was effectively an interim title and had been vacated when Mikkel Kessler was upgraded to super champion status by unifying the WBA and WBC titles. Manny Siaca is the boxer Anthony Mundine surrendered his WBA Super Middleweight title to without much of an effort in May 2004.
I thought Mundine may have timed this bout very well as Siaca was beaten into submission in Denmark by Mikkel Kessler and may well be suffering ill effects from that beating.
I was impressed by the fact that Anthony Mundine was seeking out a legitimate contender to fight, as apposed to a sacrificial lamb like his last two opponents.

Mundine has been trained for the fight by Roy Jones Sr., who told the Sydney Morning Herald that he sees 30 per cent improvement in the boxer from when he last worked with him, which was when the Australian lost to Mikkel Kessler in a title challenge.
Mundine, from Sydney, is a sharp hitter, though — he has stopped 20 opponents in his record of 25 wins, three losses — and he has the superior hand speed.
Mundine has a great boxing bloodline, too: his father, Tony, was a world-class middleweight and a Commonwealth champion who taught his son how to box and has trained him all through his career although Roy Jones Sr.
