Anthony Reed Herbert was a leading member of the British National Front during the 1970s, organising the party in Leicester and serving as chief legal adviser (he was a lawyer by profession). He had stood as NF candidate in the by-election for the City of London and Westminster South constituency (now Cities of London and Westminster) held on 24 February1977, finishing fourth with 1051 votes, ahead of fellow right wing extremists Michael Lobb of the National Party and Dennis Delderfield of the New Britain Party. Reed Herbert went on to break away from the NF in order to lead his own British Democratic Party. He went on to merge the party into the newly formed British National Party in 1982.
