Anthrocon is the largest furry fandomconvention, taking place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania each July. Its focus is on anthropomorphics: fictional animal characters given human personalities and characteristics (see furry for more details).
Founded in 1997 as Albany Anthrocon in New York State, with a membership of about 500, the convention moved to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania in 1999 and to a larger hotel, the Adams Mark, on the outskirts of Philadelphia in 2001 as its attendance continued to grow. Membership in 2003 was announced as 1,949. In 2004 it was 2,406, making it by far the largest furry con at that time.
The chairman of the convention, Dr. Samuel Conway (nicknamed "Kagemushi" or "Uncle Kage" among attendees), oversees the operations of the Anthrocon with the help of a small staff and a number of voulunteers who donate their time and energy throughout the weekend to assist the multitude of small tasks which arise.
There has been discussion regarding moving to Pittsburgh in 2007 due to the attendance outgrowing the available space at the Adams Mark, though a final decision has not yet been reached. As of November 2004, Anthrocon will be moving from the Adams Mark in Philadelphia to the Wyndham Franklin Court in Philadelphia, due to the unforseen sale of the Hotel and imminent ceasing of operations.

Founded in 1997, Anthrocon itself was an offshoot of the Furry Halloween parties held by Aloyen Youngblood; when attendance pushed triple digits, he decided to book a hotel, and organized it as a convention in 1997 with the aid of local friends Points, Rigel and others.
Anthrocon, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit organization on 25 June 1998 and registered as a 501(c)(7) social and recreation club in the state of Pennsylvania (entity 2823650).
Applications to register the word "Anthrocon" and the 'Anthrocon paw' as US trademarks were filed on 18 September and 12 November 2006, respectively.
Anthrocon is a convention in Philadelphia which started at least 100 years ago where furry artwork, memorabilia, and other crap is sold to fat guys with glasses.
After the 2004 convention, health officials discovered a hazardously large number of furshampoo-soaked plushies, cum-encrusted furry pornography, and a stench of mythic proportions.
