The Antipodes Island Parakeet (Cyanoramphus unicolor) is endemic to the Antipodes Islands, one of two parrot species found on the islands. It is the largest species in the genus Cyanoramphus. The parakeets eat leaves, buds, grass, and tussock stalks, as well as sometimes feeding on seeds, flowers, and will scavenge dead seabirds. The Antipodes Island Parakeet also preys on Grey-backed Storm-petrels. It will enter burrows to kill incubating adults, even dig at the entrance if it is too small. Antipodes (1428 words)
For obvious reasons, this parakeet is also known as the Green or Uniform Parakeet owing to it's all green colour and the lack of a coloured frontal band which is typical of all other members of the cyanoramphus family.
This parakeet lives in one of the most inhospitable places on earth - the Antipodes Island which is situated approximately 770 kilometres south-east of New Zealand at a latitude of 50 degrees south - arguably the most southern parrot on earth, along with it's cousin on the island, the Antipodes Red-Crowned Kakariki.
The Antipodes Parakeet is not a common parrot in captivity.
about (1943 words)
Antipodes Island is only 62 sq km in area, but contains a large colony of these Parakeets and surprisingly also supports a second Kakariki known as Reischek's Parakeet, a sub-species of the Red-crowned Parakeet.
There is one area where these Parakeets appear to avoid direct competition; the larger Antipodes Island Parakeet supplements its vegetarian diet by scavenging on carcasses and eggs of penguins, these birds breeding in large numbers on the islands.
The nominate Yellow-crowned Parakeet shares most of its range with the mainland Red-crowned Parakeet form, being found on the main islands and mot off-shore islands, and as far south as the Auckland Island group.
