Antonio F. Coronel (1817—1894) Los Angeles mayor from 1853-54. He is credited with establishing the Department of Public Works. Prior to being mayor of Los Angeles, he was an officer in the Mexian army. After moving to Los Angeles in 1834, he worked as a schoolteacher, served as a city councilman (1854-66) and was elected to state treasurer (1866-70).
