Born in Puerto Rico, Sanchez was steeped in the bomba and plena rhythms of the island along with the Cuban and Brazilian traditions, while the saxophonists Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker deeply influenced his playing.
