Dreamworks launched a $10 million dollar marketing campaign for the movie that was centered on the appeal of Biggs and Ricci to attract a teenage audience to the film. Trailers, TV ads and posters for the film seemed to hide the fact that the film was written and directed by Woody Allen, perhaps due to his last films being underperformers at the box office. Roger Ebert noted in his review of the film that "It's as if they have the treasure of a Woody Allen movie and they're trying to package it for the American Pie crowd." Yet the film was a flop stateside, opening at #12 its opening weekend and only grossing only $3.2 million dollars. As always for Allen's films, it performed better overseas, grossing $10.3 million dollars, but could not make back its $18 million dollar shooting budget or the $10 million dollars Dreamworks spent marketing the film. Anything Else (2003) - RUTHLESS REVIEWS: Movies (1536 words)
Anything Else might not stop the presses for its originality (as a Woody film or otherwise), but I found myself thinking these things during the movie, and it's not very often I get to think at all while sitting in the theater seats.
I would imagine that if anything these people discussed was brought up in conversation with the average American teen, he or she would run screaming from the table and into the nearest shopping mall.
Anything Else is indeed an addition to that fine tradition, although it doesn't qualify as top-tier Woody.
The Popkorn Junkie :: Anything Else (761 words)
Watching "Anything Else", I got the feeling that everyone was excited to be working and everyone was thrilled to be in their character's shoes.
With "Anything Else", Allen has done much better than with his most recent films but this movie is still far from his best efforts.
Just like anything else I would do, I went to the movies, and saw Woody Allen's latest film, "Anything Else"...I was skeptical, with the exception of Hollywood Ending, his latest films have been stupid, but this one is his best since "Everybody Says I Love You", Jason Biggs totally flexes his acting muscle.
