Aosdána (from "aos dána", Ir. "people of the arts") is an affiliation of artists in Ireland created in 1981. Since the start of 2005 membership has been limited to 210, prior to that it was limited to 200. The title of Saoi is bestowed by the membership (by election) on no more than five living members at any one time. Some members of Aosdána receive a stipend, called the Cnuas, from the Arts Council of Ireland. This stipend is intended to allow recipients to work full time at their art.
