Encyclopedia > Apache Incubator

Apache Incubator is the gateway for projects hoping to become fully fledged Apache Software Foundation projects. The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) is a non-profit corporation (classified as 501(c)3 in the United States) to support Apache software projects, including the Apache HTTP Server. ...

The Incubator project was created in October of 2002 to provide an entry path to the Apache Software Foundation for projects and codebases wishing to become part of the Foundation's efforts. Code donations from external organisations and existing external projects wishing to move to Apache will enter through the Incubator.

A large part of the Incubator's effort will be devoted to providing documentation on how the Foundation works, and how to get things done within its framework. As a consequence, it is expected that the Incubator will also become a reference for new contributors to any of the Apache projects.

Since the Incubator project is one of the primary gateways into Apache involvement, a lot of the documentation about the structural and philosophical details of the Foundation will probably be prototyped and developed right here. When they seem to accurately reflect reality and cover the information they should, they'll probably be moved up to the Foundation's main Web site.

Incubation is required of all newly accepted projects until a further review indicates that the infrastructure, communications, and decision-making process have stabilised in a manner consistent with other successful ASF projects.
While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection of the completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate that the project has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF.
Apache Cocoon is a web development framework built around the concept of separation of concerns (that is: allowing people to do their job without having to step on each other toes) and component-oriented web RAD.
