Global Development Network: Opening Ceremony, First Annual Conference (622 words) |
 | Apolo R. Nsibambi, Prime Minister of Uganda, urged 400 researchers and heads of development think tanks from around the world to ensure that their work resulted in better government policies that lead to more rapid improvements in people's lives. |
 | Nsibambi was one of several speakers at the opening plenary session of the first Global Development Network (GDN) meeting, held in Bonn, Germany from 5-8 December 1999. |
 | Nsibambi pointed out shortcomings in the development research in both developed and developing countries, and urged the policy researchers to overcome these:"The knowledge of the communities in the South is sometimes deliberately ignored by Northern researchers, who prefer to make their own short-term research on Southern communities and their development problems." |
