Apples in Stereo is an indie rock band associated with the innovative Elephant 6 Recording Company, a group of bands also including Neutral Milk Hotel, Secret Square and Olivia Tremor Control. Led by Robert Schneider, the band formed in Denver, Colorado with Jim McIntyre, Chris Parfitt and Hilarie Sidney. Their debut release was 1995's Fun Trick Noisemaker. Sunny pop band the Apples in Stereo was one of the leading lights of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective, a coterie of like-minded, lo-fi indie groups -- including the Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Secret Square -- who shared musicians, ideas, and sensibilities.
The Apples in Stereo returned in the fall of 1997 with Tone Soul Evolution; shortly after its release, the band signed a distribution deal with Sire and the album was re-released in January of the following year.
In fall 2002, Schneider and Apples in Stereo issued their most ambitious effort to date with Velocity of Sound.

Apples in Stereo return to their raw core
Instead, the Apples have taken the Boys' sound to its logical conclusion, mixing in hefty doses of The Beatles' intelligence, Monkees (circa "Stepping Stone") sass, Matthew Sweet's bittersweet fuzz and a full-on injection of punk propulsion.
Apples in Stereo emerged out of the Denver music scene as part of the Elephant 6 collective (see sidebar), though it took a few years for the current lineup of Sidney, Schneider, bassist Eric Allen and rhythm guitarist John Hill to solidify.
