Website name, theme, or design changes

  • Geek/Talk changed its name and logo to Gtalk after claiming to have been acquired by Google. New moderators from 'Google' were introduced to help sell the gag.
  • Neopets.com made up "NeoCharge" where users are charged Neopoints to load/refresh pages, chat or go to another page.
  • www.samurize.com incorporated a pink theme for their site, and changed the name from Samurize to '1337 Powerpuff Girls Meter Tool'.
  • www.Airliners.net incorporated a pink theme for their front page. They had a message on the front page saying "With over 98% male users, Airliners.net needs to take major action to attract more female visitors. As a first step, we're changing the colors of the site to shades of pink. The whole site will soon be totally pink. Enjoy!"
  • fuckedgoogle.com the author of this notorious anti-google site claimed to have fallen in love with a google employee. the site was totally redesigned to show his love for google and his re-thinking of the whole "google is evil" thing.
  • Hedgehog World changed its theme to include ferrets instead of hedgehogs. It changed back around 11:00 p.m. EST.
  • Unicyclist Fourms changed to a pink theme. It changed back around 9:00EST.
  • Slashdot incorporated a pink "OMG!!! Ponies!!!" theme [1] at 00:00 UTC. This girlish theme is in stark contrast for a techie website believed to be mostly frequented by male nerds. A "Special Birthday Report" [2] about Jeff "Hemos" Bates emerged in the first minutes of the day. A link to Thinkgeek's wireless extension cords has also been posted.
  • Linkfilter changes its default theme to resemble that of MetaFilter [3].
  • textfiles.com [4] changes its default theme to resemble that of Google, announcing that they have merged to form "Toogle". [5]
  • Compsci Compsci v3 was released, Hello Kitty theme!
  • Jude2.com Christian Forums changed the logo and color theme to bright, multi, obnoxious colors.
  • DSmeet.com changed its name and design to Turtle Land, confusing many of its members.
  • Broadsheet, a Salon.com blog which centers on Women's issues, changed today to Bradsheet, changing the theme from pink to blue, and centering the articles around Brad Pitt.
  • Webstock, serves its pages without images, CSS or javascript as an environmentally conscious guesture.
  • http://www.forgetfoo.com foo put up a new page that simply said "Its been fun", redirecting every page on his site to this one, implying that he had shut his site down for good.
  • Fruitcake MIDI was allegedly hacked by the owner's "morbidly depressed cousin", becoming the emo-inspired Gothcake MIDI.
  • Boylove web forum BoyChat changed its site banner to read "MaoChat: Discussion Board of the Communist Party of the People's Republic of China."
  • DDR Online Brasil, a Brazilian Dance Dance Revolution fansite and community, changed every reference to DDR or Pump It Up! on the website (including the website's title and logos) to mention Samba Festival, a now-defunct DDR clone which, due to its bad timing, bad song selection and poor interface, was often criticized by the visitors on the site's forum. The April fools version is now available here (in Brazilian Portuguese).
  • Zophar's Domain, an emulation portal, changed to a google-like theme and announced that they had merged with google to form "Goophar's Domain"
  • JamBase, a live music search engine, changed to a Google like theme: [6]
  • Sonic Classic changed its entire website to a page owned by a person under the nickname "ih8bush," which was deliberately done very badly.
  • 4q.cc changed the layout of the site to use the complete opposite colors of the normal layout.
  • Stick Figure Death Theatre changed the homepage to feature a dance club. However, any link on the page redirected the visitor to the original site.

  • DevImg comments are filtered into an AOL-speak format.
  • Psypoke celebrated "Seizure Awareness Day". The background consisted of flashing colors. This was a reference to the Electric Soldier Porygon controversy.
  • Cartoon Network's Adult Swim message board administrators changed the language filter from normal "**bleep**" to funny sayings like '**GOLD TEETH**. However, they took it down within a couple hours. They renamed several members to 'Canada' and various other countries and cities. On the block they aired Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos instead of the scheduled Inuyasha.
  • All content on the Ordo Templi Orientis U.S. Grand Lodge site was modified to follow Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth's spelling conventions ("ov" rather than "of", for example).
  • Ephemeral has rankled the X-Files fanfic community, replacing their favorite characters in posted fanfic with burrowing animals.
  • OS News gave every member who logged in an upgrade to subscriber edition for free, saying that a "haxx0r" had hacked into the OS News servers.
  • Broadbandreports forums switched many members' avatars around.
  • noon Sports Forum made an announcement that the forum was under new management by a member named "Mr. L33T!!!" (who was really an Admin with a different display name) who only talked in leetspeak. In addition, some of the sections had their names and descriptions translated into leetspeak.
  • 2ch.net, the largest public message board in Japan, marked all posts made on April 1st, 2006 with the date March 32nd, 2006. Japanese Wikipedia page here.
  • endignorance.com, an underground Guam-based community calls it quits .
  • Albino Blacksheep's front page linked to a Flash video supposedly representative of "one of the best animations in the Flash industry," which was instead a crudely animated, nonsensical video of stick figures and defecation.
  • Sitcoms Online changed the user rank of all of its forum members plus its moderators and administrators to "Banned", and changed the rank of its banned users to "Administrator"
  • TDZK's ship classes were changed to various types of fish, and several weapons were renamed to those of fishing tools, such as fileting knives, spears, and nets.
  • The main website of KO-Chan.org was changed to look like it was undergoing Japanese translation and looked as if it were being bought out by 2ch, followed by a front page that displayed a message from Interpol, stating that the website had been shut down due to the promotion of illegal immigration in Europe.
  • New Zealand Humor based forum loob.co.nz translated their entire site into Spanish. screenshot
  • Golem-Templates, Template web page switches their layout to display terrible web designs and stock photos no one would want.
  • East Coast Scanning Resources administrator, embj, planned a fake website hacking. The logo was changed to depict the character, Plankton, from the television series SpongeBob SquarePants, the "Hosted by:" logo was changed from "ServerFAQs" to "server FAGS", the forum name was changed to "JOES PUBLIC ENTERTAIMENT network", and the so called "hacker" registered and made a post from the IP address of 0.0.0.0. Also, the forum permissions were changed to only display forums to the administrators; however, the other administrator, Joseph11, had his password changed so he could not access his account. The staff had no knowledge of this prank.
  • Mobius-X A Sonic The Hedgehog and Megaman fan-site, faked a hacker attack, in which the forum skin was changed and a Chuck Norris banner was added. The kicker though was the editing of the word filters to replace every vowel and other letters with "CHUCK NORRIS", so messages appeared like so: thCHUCK NORRISs CHUCK NORRISs stCHUCK NORRISpCHUCK NORRISd.
  • Jonny's Place A Sonic the Hedgehog fansite, was changed to a supposed archive of hentai, but each image was actually a popular 4chan meme known as "Cock Mongler." The forums also saw changes; word filters caused words such as "Sonic" and "Mario" to become switched, and the only available emoticon was a photoshopped image of the face of one of the administrators.
  • Malespank A male/male spanking story archive changed the male pronouns in all 8300 stories into female.
  • MetalMachineMusic A Zoids RPG website replaced their homepage with a notice supposedly from Block9 saying that Hasbro had complained to them about the content of the site and it was going to be taken down in 48 hours. Also, some members of the forums had their Avatars changed to one of something similar to a running Llama, in different attire.
  • Dogasu's Backpack A Pokemon web site that compares American and Japanese version of "Pocket Monster" with 4Kids's edited version did a fake version of 4Kids only edit for "Mean With Evy" that replaced Glalie for a trainer's Jynx.
  • MuggleNet.com, a Harry Potter fansite, changed their layout outrageously.
  • The Mario fansite Lemmy's Land claimed that due to the webmaster's hurt wrist, he had to take some "high-maintainance" sections down. Its message board changed to "THE PPL'Z LAND", which had liberal use of a certain smiley and had a logo that was deliberately done badly.

  • Weblognews.nl announced to pay Bloggers for their posts if they placed an iframe-banner on their site. Many signed up, only to see the banner on their own site change to "Wooot! you're pwned by Ochblog!" on April first.
  • SaysDave reported on the new defense teleportation system.
  • ctrl-click, a technology news site, announced that a takeover by Macrumors.com has been completed.
  • The Thudgame Discworld Boardgame site announced that they had been acquired by Google and released a Google-ised beta version of the new Thud client to celebrate the "event"!
  • Capitalex.com announced that PayPal has acquired e-gold!
  • Google Community announced that they were acquired by Yahoo!
  • HaikuNews has a story of two developers working on a haiku port to a palm handheld and a cellphone. This article also claims that haiku is forking to use the linux kernel.
  • Yahoo! has an "SM News" breaking story about a new "No Talking" law on New York City Subways - Yahoo.com (Note: is a Sierra Mist ad that does not redirect, but plays a video in page)
  • A leaked Google press release announces that AdSense publishers can now click their own ads as long as they don't use automated means to do it.
  • AOL UK announces a new reality show, where celebrities will operate on members of the public. This entertainment news item seems to be in AOL members-only pages. The link for members of the public to apply to be operated on goes to April Fools hoax on Google.
  • Ars Technica reviews a new game, Duke Nukem Forever (Warning: Contains potentially offensive content). (See Duke Nukem Forever)
  • Blizzard Entertainment announced that the new Alliance race for their upcoming World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade will be Wisps. They possess the radical ability to detonate themselves in order to strengthen their fellow players or weaken enemies. Due to the fact that the player would be permanently dead after doing this, many players claim that this is not a joke, considering the news was released on March 31 - the day before April Fool's Day. However, when the information was released, it was April 1st in China and Japan, with China having a very large World Of Warcraft presence.
  • Blizzard Entertainment announced the 1.11 Patch Notes. Just days after 1.10 was released!

  • CNET posted video reviews of the fake E-vri-thin gadget, a 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham, and a 1988 Ford Crown Victoria Country Squire LX.
  • Webmaster Hot Spot announced that their site had been sold to a new owner, who was going to merge it with his own large webmaster forums. The original admin accounts were marked as banned, and the site logo was changed to a handwritten "Aurex", apparently the name of the new owner. A day later, the announcement was removed, and the admins pretended that nothing had ever happened.
  • ConservativeDebate posted a fake article concerning a make-believe trip that Sandra Day O'Connor made to the UN. The word censor was also changed so every use of the article 'a' was replaced with the message "April fools".
  • DivX Head Up Display (XHUD), an in-car head up display for projecting DivX video on your front windshield.
  • Desicritics.org announces that Sonia Gandhi is returning to Italy, George Clooney is running for President in 2008, and Saurav Ganguly is retiring from Cricket
  • Edmunds.com announced Lotus' decision to build a pick-up truck named F1.50 with an 11 pound payload and 22 pound hauling load.
  • Electric Minds announced its acquisition by Slashdot to create "SlashMinds."
  • Eskimo Bob announced a name change to "Chauncey of the North" to avoid confusion with Bob the Builder. [7]
  • The MMORPG, Eternal Lands announced that it had been bought out by the FSF for $250000 and 4000 shares, so all Windows builds would be removed, rare items would be redistributed, and everything would be released under the GPL v3. Unfortunately, many players were fooled by the extremely obvious fake. See [8].

  • Mess.be's administrator, Dwergs, announces that his site will now shift focus from Microsoft's MSN Messenger to Google's IM Client, Google Talk.
  • NSMB.com announced that BikerFox joined Team nsmb.com.
  • CONNECTING THE DOTS a technology blogger gives up nearly a year and a half of effort to become 'Connecting the Stitches', one man's journey into knitting.
  • Newgrounds.com announced that they have acquired I-Mockery.com. The actual I-Mockery homepage was styled to look Newgrounds-branded and was renamed I-Grounds.
  • Paper Programs, a small open source development group was bought up by Microsoft
  • Pkmn.Net reported that the elusive Celebi could be caught in Pokémon Emerald. In addition, anyone typing 'Pokémon' in the forums would have it come out as 'Digimon', among many other things.
  • Sirius Backstage announces that Sirius Satellite Radio will begin having up to 6 minutes of commercial on 5 different music stations.
  • Astronomy Picture of the day sing the new camera on the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have been able to confirm that the Moon is made of green cheese. The telling clue was the resolution of a marked date after which the Moon may go bad.
  • Channel 9 Mike Hall - Network Enabled Refrigeration Device (and pranks at Microsoft)
  • Celebrity Death Toll reports that Christopher Walken is dead.
  • TVEps is reporting that Isaac 'Chef' Hayes not leaving southpark after all. He comes clean that it was a publicity stunt.
  • Macintosh news website TidBITS announces that editor Joe Kissell is leaving to "spend more time with his family."
  • 22Pixels reports on a new Adobe Photoshop CS2.5, the download leads to the old Random Burper.
  • 4chan claims that their editor called moot has been eaten by a shark
  • p0rk.com decides to stay open.
  • Chitika declares invalid clicks valid
  • Gorillaz-Unofficial, a Livejournal-based fansite dedicated to animated supergroup Gorillaz, posts a fictitious newspaper article claiming 2-D's ex-girlfriend and Gorillaz ex-guitarist Paula will be rejoining the band on their upcoming world tour and releasing a solo album including the single "Baby To Me You're Nothing But A Dick And A Wallet (So Why Don't You Love Me No More?)." The article is supposedly taken from Musicmatch Magazine, which does not actually exist, and site moderator 2-J later confessed that a "talented graphics artist" was responsible for the prank.
  • DS-Play.com site admin, RoCkeee, pranked the site into thinking Bungie would be releasing a Halo DS, by showing off a fake e-mail from the Bungie Community Support.
  • Cosplay.com Front page had an image of a lumberjack stating that the site had been "Lumberjaxxed." Upon clicking the image, you were taken to the forums which had a picture of Paul Bunyan and his blue Ox. Many of the forum titles were changed and words were automatically replaced, such as "anime" to "japanimation."
  • MacGenealogy.org announces Apple entering the genealogy business and releasing "iRoots" and "iRoots Pro" genealogy applications in early 2007.
  • ntl:hell claims to be now owned and operated by BT.
  • VideoLAN reports they dropped support for G4 and G5 series to only support Intel.
  • HAHMED.COM - Announced that his website/domain would be sold on ebay, and his widely-read blog would now come to an end
  • www.mtgsalvation.com - In wake of the lawsuit against one of its members for 'leaking' information before the release of a set, the staff of the respective forum announced that Hasbro was ready to take legal action against the site unless they got rid of all references to the card game Magic: The Gathering. They went as far as purchasing a new url (www.cardgamesalvation.com), creating a new logo for the site, changing members names so that they did not reference any cards from the game, and censoring the word 'Magic'.
  • MagicTheGathering.com provided viewers with "live coverage" of a "Global Prix", a fake event that anyone in the world who played on April 1 was automatically entered in. Updates throughout the day gave "standings" which had the names of many professional players, generally from one continent only. Also, profiles with "famous" players were released, among them BYE, who had appeared at every event in history and had never won a match before shocking the world by going 5-3 in the Global Prix. (This was a parody on the Magic Swiss-style tournament seedings, where players not matched up would get a bye and an automatic win; this is represented in records as the match "Player vs. BYE".)
  • Nwizard.com, a Nintendo-centric videogame news site, has reported that the recently indefinitely delayed Starcraft: Ghost has been announced for the Nintendo Revolution. In addition, various modules around the site have been "April Fooled".
  • Locus Online ran a fake news item stating that Lucasfilm had licensed a new line of "Adult" Star Wars novels, including Brokeback Mountain by E. Annie Proulx "which explores the forbidden love between Han Solo and Chewbacca".
  • Colgate-Palmolive announces it shall be merging with NYLUG in an effort to create open source cleaning products.
  • Macrumors.com created a page of fake Apple rumors, including iTunes changing to WMA, and Apple and Disney acquiring each other in a complicated takeover.
  • Anything4Free.com posted a news blog featuring OfferCentric, LLC which mocked FreePay's new 90-Day Policy.
  • Amazon.com CTO announces that Amazon will make all employee IM addresses available for better customer service.
  • Conservative journal Enter Stage Right announced on its blog that its conservative founder had converted to liberalism and would use the site to only promote "social justice"
  • Sonic Cult faked various Sonic X-treme related information and images, claiming it to be from a lost beta which was up for download, but did not work on any emulators.
  • Turdhead.com introduced its newest online game, "Staring Contest" (a followup to last month's "Guess Which hand").
  • The Noblecast commentator Noble Brown announced that he was giving his life to Christ and turning himself in for all his horrid, unspeakable deeds.
